Ethiopian immigrant accused of crimes against humanity faces trial

U.S. District Court Judge John Kane on Thursday set Aug. 12 as the date to begin the trial of an Ethiopian immigrant known officially as John Doe who allegedly tortured and killed political prisoners in his home country.
Prosecutors believe Doe's real name is Kefelegn Alemu Worku and that he tortured and killed political prisoners in his home country during the late 1970s.
He is not charged in relation to the alleged Ethiopian crimes. Instead, federal officials accuse him of lying on immigration documents and have charged him with identity theft and immigration offenses.
He was scheduled to plead guilty Thursday, but his lawyer, Matthew Golla, told Kane that Doe, who lived here under the name Habteab Berhe Temanu, wanted more time to review his plea agreement.
His decision came two days after prosecutors filed notice they would present testimony at his sentencing about his alleged involvement in Ethiopia's "Red Terror," when thousands were killed by the government.
