Ethiopian Football Federation to investigate fan violence

Ethiopian FA president Juniedin Basha has assured the Nigerian Football Federation that allegations of fan misconduct will be investigated.

After Nigeria defeated the Walia Antelopes 2-1 in Addis Ababa on Sunday, midfielder Nosa Igiebor was badly injured when local fans reportedly attacked the Super Eagles' team bus as it was leaving the stadium.

The incident has elicited strong condemnation from several quarters, and now the Ethiopian Football Association has said why it had not yet begun an investigation into the allegations of violence after the crucial World Cup qualification play-off.

"Tuesday was a holiday in Ethiopia so we couldn't do anything about it," the BBC quoted Basha saying. "We saw the reports that Nigeria's bus was attacked and a player was injured."

The recently elected president then added coolly: "But we will work with the security forces to investigate what has actually happened and hopefully respond soon."

The high stakes return leg is scheduled to be played in Calabar on the 16th of November.
