Ethiopian among world top 50 cargo airlines

Ethiopian CargoAddis Ababa, Ethiopia – The Ethiopian cargo, the largest cargo operator in Africa, has been ranked by revenue 43rd out of the top 100 global operators in 2012 according to Airline Business Magazine, a publication of Flight Global, the world’s leading aviation media brand.
Ethiopian Cargo was also ranked 49th by traffic out of the top 100 global operators surveyed by Airline Business Magazine. Ethiopian cargo is supporting the economic and trade growth of Ethiopia and Africa by transporting perishables from Africa and bringing high value goods into the continent.
“We are very pleased to be ranked among the top global cargo operators. Our cargo business is facilitating trade within Africa as well as between Africa and the rest of the world. We are supporting the growth of Ethiopia’s exports of perishables, such as horticulture products, by availing state-of-the art freighters like the B777F and modern storage facilities. Going forward, in line with our Vision 2025, we have re-structured our cargo division as a full-fledged profit center so as to better tap into the enormous opportunities offered by the African market and to better serve our customers. By 2025, Ethiopian cargo aims to be the leading cargo service provider in Africa supporting the fast economic development of the continent and transporting 820,000 tonnes of cargo per annum.” said Ethiopian Public Relations Office.
Ethiopian cargo operates six dedicated cargo freighters including two B777-200LRs serving 26 cargo destinations globally. Ethiopian is the first in Africa to own and operate the B777F, which has the ability to connect any two points in the world non-stop carrying 103 tonnes of cargo with reduced fuel consumption and less emission. This has especially been good news for exporters of perishable goods such as flowers, vegetables, fruits and meat. Ethiopian B777F has the ability to maintain cold temperatures of up to 4 degree centigrade allowing perishable goods reach their destination maintaining their freshness and quality.
On top of its cargo hubs in Liège, Hong Kong, Mumbai and Dubai, Ethiopian recently opened a second cargo hub in Africa, in Lomé, Togo, to serve more than 10 destinations in Western and Central Africa in partnership with ASKY, a regional airline in West Africa.
