An Oil well dig started in Ogaden, Ethiopia

A British company named New age started an oil well dig in a place called Elkuran in the Ogaden Basin of the Somali Region. New Age has been engaged in Oil Exploration activity with another Canadian based company, Africa Oil, in the Ogaden’s block seven, eight and the Adigala areas’.

The oil dig that has started last week has been postponed due to some technical problems on the company’s oil rigs. This 2,800 meters deep oil well dig will be finalized in three months’ time. Then it would be possible to know whether there is enough oil in the place.

As sources indicated, as late as the 1970’s it is known that there exists oil in the area. What is most important and the main reason behind the dig now is to determine whether the amount of oil in the place is huge enough for the economically feasible oil extraction.

It is known that at the Emperor Hailesellasie’s era an American company named Teneko had found oil and natural gas in the area. But since the amount discovered in the area was not huge enough, the company has to abandon the project and leave the country.

Now, as some petroleum experts commented, sophisticated technology available at this time might have helped the two companies found a considerable amount in the area.
