Ethiopia: Security Council Members Visit Addis Ababa
As part of an official visit to countries in
Africa's Great Lakes region, members of the United Nations Security
Council have over the past few days met with various Heads of State and
Government in the region to discuss the implementation of the broad
based peace accord agreed earlier this year.
At the weekend, the Security Council delegation was in the DRC, and they also travelled to Rwanda, Uganda and then visited Addis Ababa to meet with the Peace and Security Council of the African Union and with Ethiopia's Prime Minister Hailemariam, the Chairperson of the African Union. The delegation is set to return to New York on Wednesday. The Prime Minister told the delegation that Ethiopia and the African Union would continue to support the United Nations efforts in building peace and stability in Africa.
He noted that although Africa was trying to solve its problems by itself, it still needed support from the international community to achieve this. In this regard, the contribution of the UN was particularly significant, he added.
He underlined the importance of the AU Peace and Security Council and the UN Security Council discussions their respective decisions. In addition to the Great lakes, the discussion covered Central African Republic, Mali, Sudan and South Sudan, as well as ways of strengthening the Somali Federal Government and the fight against Al-Shabaab.
