Man found guilty of kidnapping woman

The 25-year-old man who abducted a woman from Brew River in February was found guilty by a Wicomico County jury Thursday.

Adene H. Bekele, of Salisbury, was found guilty of kidnapping, second-degree assault, false imprisonment and wearing a dangerous weapon with the intent to injure.

Bekele abducted the 20-year-old woman while posing as a cab driver on Feb. 1. He drove past the woman’s house without stopping, taking her to an apartment on West Main Street instead.

Bekele brought the victim to a bedroom and put an item — the victim thinks it was a folding knife she had seen — to her throat.

"The subject demanded that (the victim) smoke from the hookah while holding the object to (the victim's) throat," state court documents.

When he left the bedroom door open, the woman was able to escape and call 911.

Pending a sentencing hearing, Bekele will be held without bond.
